ODU Day at Virginia General Assembly
On February 1st, 2024, I was honored to be selected as one of the students representing Old Dominion University during ODU Day at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond, VA. This event brought together students, faculty, and alumni to meet with legislators, share perspectives, and advocate for higher education initiatives.
Experience and Engagement
During the visit, I met with several legislators and their staff to discuss ODU’s programs, research initiatives, and student experiences. I also had the opportunity to have lunch with ODU alumni at the Library of Virginia, which provided valuable networking and insight into professional paths and experiences. This experience offered a firsthand look at how advocacy and policy-making intersect with higher education and highlighted the importance of clear communication and preparation when representing an organization.
Skills and Insights Gained
Participating in ODU Day helped me strengthen professional skills such as public speaking, networking, and relationship-building. I gained a deeper understanding of how government decisions affect universities and students, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and informed advocacy. The event emphasized the value of being articulate, confident, and knowledgeable when representing an institution or a cause.
Personal Reflection
ODU Day was both inspiring and educational. It was rewarding to contribute to a larger dialogue about higher education and see the impact students can have in shaping policy discussions. The opportunity to meet legislators, staff, and alumni strengthened my confidence in professional settings and motivated me to continue developing my communication, leadership, and advocacy skills.
